They are also known to be intelligent and playful problem-solvers, who work together as a team for survival. I love watching them and find them quite interesting and inspiring characters...and so vocal! They are wonderful subjects for paintings, and I have created a LOT of raven-inspired artwork.

I feel inspired by getting outside to do some spring downhill skiing in the mountains. I created this painting to try to capture the feeling of the cold air and snow, but the warmth of the sun on your skin. It reminds me of many spring ski days where the snow is heavy and thick as the sun starts melting it. I made this piece to feel the movement of downhill skiing on a warm spring afternoon, with long tree shadows cast on the snow. I created it as a piece for fellow skiers to enjoy in their home or office.

I am always inspired by summer in the mountains, o I created this large painting titled Summer Views which depicts the color and beauty in the height of the wildflower season. It reminds me of the many years I spent living in the mountains, spending warm summer days hiking in the backcountry enjoying the scenery and views. I made it to feel magical and special, sharing the joy and delight we feel when we connect to Nature. I created it as a feature piece for fellow Nature lover(s) to enjoy in their home or office.

I was inspired by the bold colours of autumn in the mountains, so I created this depiction of the warm gold and red foliage contrasted against the blues and grays of the mountains, lake and sky. It reminds me of walking in cooler temperatures but still with warm sunshine on my skin. I made it to feel warm and cool at the same time, and to remember the fresh vibrant energy of fall. I created it as part of a larger “Changing Seasons” art collection.

I was inspired by a herd of wild horses that I had the opportunity to spend some time observing, so I created this large scale painting of the herd joyfully moving together across the golden meadow under the setting sun. It reminds me of the long days of late summer, with rich warm tones and golden light. I made it to feel powerful and passionate. PORTALXII: Art Installation

What a great opportunity and experience to plan and execute the installation of my first public art project! The unveiling of PORTALXII sculpture is today Friday, June 17 at 5:30-7:30PM.

The tradition of "place marking" is simple, universal and timeless. This meaningful global human legacy includes inscribing the landscape to signify the relationship and use of the environment. Standing Stones, employed as significant place-marking vehicles, are seen in both pre-historical and modern time frames, and their purposes range from spiritual to navigational. PORTALXII design integrates three established place-marking traditions: Stone Rings of the British Isles, Inukshuk of the Arctic region, and Standing Stones of the Japanese Zen Garden. The arrangement of the standing stones of PORTALXII is designed in a spiral shape (helix) which references patterns in nature and also invites physical interaction.

PORTALXII features unique, hand-picked, locally quarried Rundle Rock from Kamenka Quarry to specifically reference Canmore's unique community and history, while also honoring the universal human need for place-marking to communicate a sense of place and relationship to the environment. This design is an engaging testament to the relationship between Canmore residents, community and environment, and offers an experience to contemplate our place within the context of human history.

Wheeler House-Reflections: A Tribute

 

In July, 2010, 10 artists were allowed permission to access and document the Claremont Cottage before it was scheduled for demolition. This was the summer home of A.O Wheeler, a land surveyor and co-founder of the ACC (Alpine Club of Canada) The house was remarkable, with a goldfish pond in the front yard where the domestic goldfish have remained in the warm spring fed pond for the past 90 years. My photo is a reflection taken in the pond, and if you look closely, you will see the goldfish in the trees and the bottom of the pond in the sky. The project was organized by Donna-Jo Massie and the link will take you to an article about the art exhibition in Oct 2010. Last week, the Wheeler house was destroyed. All artwork from this project will be purchased by the Wheeler House Foundation.
