I created a series of Dark Sky paintings for an exhibition titled “Nostalgia” in 2024. At the time I was first learning about the term “noctalgia” and contemplating this theme, I found myself driving south on Hwy 22 to the Leighton Art Centre to drop off a painting. I love that drive through the foothills and once again I passed the sign for the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory. Every time I drive by, I wonder about that place and what goes on there...? One day or night, I would like to visit this place. In the meantime, I looked it up online and learned a bit more about it. It is part of the University of Calgary where teaching and research connects with Public Education and Community Engagement. The RAO is a working science facility and is open to the public during programs or events, and is part of global efforts to protect dark skies. It is the Southern Alberta representative for the International dark Skies Association. It is located in Dark Sky Country of the foothills, forming a dark sky corridor on the western section of Calgary that includes the Weaselhead Conservation Society, Leighton Arts Centre and Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area, protecting the wilderness of the night sky. It was a bright winter day when I was there, but I took a number of photographs and decided to use my imagination to translate them to magical, star-filled, moonlit skyscapes in the protected Dark Skies Corridor for the exhibition.

I feel inspired by getting outside to do some spring downhill skiing in the mountains. I created this painting to try to capture the feeling of the cold air and snow, but the warmth of the sun on your skin. It reminds me of many spring ski days where the snow is heavy and thick as the sun starts melting it. I made this piece to feel the movement of downhill skiing on a warm spring afternoon, with long tree shadows cast on the snow. I created it as a piece for fellow skiers to enjoy in their home or office.

I have been inspired by the Japanese practice of “shinrin-yoku”, “Forest Bathing”, or spending time in the forest for wellbeing, since I first heard about it. I learned more about the practice and created this large Forest Bathing inspired painting. It reminds me of the time I spent wandering in the forest and observing the dappled light filtered through the trees. I made it to feel meditative and peaceful, alive and luminous, as I do when I connect with Nature. I created it as a feature piece for fellow Nature lover(s) to enjoy in their home or office.

I am always inspired by summer in the mountains, o I created this large painting titled Summer Views which depicts the color and beauty in the height of the wildflower season. It reminds me of the many years I spent living in the mountains, spending warm summer days hiking in the backcountry enjoying the scenery and views. I made it to feel magical and special, sharing the joy and delight we feel when we connect to Nature. I created it as a feature piece for fellow Nature lover(s) to enjoy in their home or office.

I was inspired by the bold colours of autumn in the mountains, so I created this depiction of the warm gold and red foliage contrasted against the blues and grays of the mountains, lake and sky. It reminds me of walking in cooler temperatures but still with warm sunshine on my skin. I made it to feel warm and cool at the same time, and to remember the fresh vibrant energy of fall. I created it as part of a larger “Changing Seasons” art collection.

I was inspired by a herd of wild horses that I had the opportunity to spend some time observing, so I created this large scale painting of the herd joyfully moving together across the golden meadow under the setting sun. It reminds me of the long days of late summer, with rich warm tones and golden light. I made it to feel powerful and passionate.
