InTer-CoNNecTion Series:
This is a new series of work completed summer 2012
The word "mandala" is from the classical
Indian language of Sanskrit. Loosely translated to mean "circle," a
mandala is far more than a simple shape. It represents wholeness, and can be
seen as a model for the organizational structure of life itself--a cosmic
diagram that reminds us of our relation to the infinite, the world that extends
both beyond and within our bodies and minds. Describing both material and non-material realities,
the mandala appears in all aspects of life: the celestial circles we call
earth, sun, and moon, as well as conceptual circles of friends, family, and
community. (www.mandalaproject.org)
In
common use, mandala has become a generic term for any plan, chart or geometric
pattern that represents the cosmos
metaphysically or symbolically, a microcosm
of the universe from the human
perspective. (www.wikipedia.org)
Mandalas
have been created by humans internationally and cross-culturally to express and
promote concepts of unity, wholeness, and balance. Mandalas are integrated in
cultures, architectures and traditions including Christian, Islamic, Celtic,
Buddhist, Aboriginal and Hindu. Mandala forms and patterns are also found
associated with science, art and mathematics. Mandalas are based on the laws of
nature and the natural world and can be found on micro and macro levels from
single cells to the cosmos, and can represent experiences individual to
collective.
I
am creating large-scale mandala-inspired paintings as a way to explore the relationship between
natural and organized patterns. My intention is to create a series of paintings that reference collective cross-cultural traditions and inspire individual
interpretation. I have repeated the use of the circle
within each of the six individual pieces in the series, and also by painting
each mandala in an analogous color scheme to include the colour spectrum.
